Or maybe that’s just me. After all, this isn’t the Definitive best music of 2015 list. They’re part of a dying breed-straight white dudes in a world that’s hungry for other voices. So, I guess, congratulations are in order for Father John Misty and Jamie xx. Straight-up pop? Carly Rae, Jess Glynne, and Chvrches all out-paced Justin Bieber and One Direction in overall content (not jamz, though, Biebz you still the king there boi). Rap and R&B, of course, were never the white guy’s domain. But the vast majority of great guitar rock records I heard in 2015 were fronted by women–the other one was by PWR BTTM, a drag-wearing, makeup-smearing gay duo. Radiohead and Vampire Weekend are due for new music (and thank Allah), and will probably get some recognition in 2016 if/when they release their new projects. Well, sure, they didn’t release any content this year. Where are the Radioheads? The Timberlakes? The Vampire Weekends? Father John Misty and Jamie xx are the only two straight white dudes consistently cracking the top ten. There have been sneaking suspicions for the last decade or so. Not because my choices were reflected by Pitchfork or Stereogrum (they aren’t, you won’t see PWR BTTM, Jess Glynne, or Hiatus Kaiyote anywhere close to their Best Of Lists), but because it confirms a suspicion I first had in mid-July: rock and pop officially don’t belong to straight white men anymore.Īdmittedly, this is probably a dated notion. In constructing this completely arbitrary and rather late listicle, I felt a strong surge of validation.
